Anthony P. Domaleski

Anthony P. Domaleski of Cutchogue died Oct. 19, 2014. He was 93. 

“Tony” was born in Brooklyn, April 29, 1921, to Stephania (née Targonski) and Alexander Domaleski and attended Oregon Road School where he learned English and then Mattituck High School.

On September 26, 1948, he married the former Jane Orlowski.

For many years, he was a potato farmer with A & H Domaleski Farm with his brother Henry. Later, he grew strawberries by the red barn on the North Road in Cutchogue.

Tony was a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Name Society, the Cutchogue Polish Democratic Club and the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jane; a son John Domaleski of Warren, R.I.; a daughter Karen Helinski of Southold; a brother, Henry Domaleski of Cutchogue; and three grandchildren, Kristen Helinski, Ryan Klauk and Erin Klauk. He was predeceased by a daughter Alice Domaleski on October 6, 1989.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 22,  from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations to the Cutchogue Fire Department, 260 New Suffolk Road, Cutchogue, NY 11935 would be appreciated.

Shirley E. Asher

Longtime New Suffolk resident Shirley E. Asher died Oct. 22. She was 89. 

She was born in Queens Dec. 20, 1924, to John and Edith (Smith) Heffernan.

Formerly of Baldwin, Ms Asher moved to New Suffolk in 1960. For 50 years, she worked for Baxter Bros. in Mattituck, retiring as office manager.

She was a member and secretary of the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church and the secretary for the Cutchogue Cemetery Association.

Predeceased by her husband John Asher, Feb. 8, 1997, she is survived by her daughters, Noreen Berstein of Virginia and Linda Hill of Coram; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Oct. 25 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck where funeral services were conducted by her son-in-law, the Rev. Richard O. Hill of Hope Lutheran Church in Selden. Interment took place Oct. 26 at the Cutchogue Cemetery. 

Bertha Wysocki Vaughan

Former Orient resident Bertha Wysocki Vaughan died Oct. 16, 2014 in Huntsville, Texas. 

She was born in Jersey City, N.J. and moved to Orient at a young age with her parents Veronika and William Wysocki, Sr. Ms. Vaughan graduated from Greenport High School in 1934 and moved to New York City and attended New York University to become a dietitian.

Bertha and Hunter Vaughan were married at Orient Congregational Church May 4, 1957. After living many years in New York City they moved to Houston, Texas, and upon retirement moved to Huntsville. Family members said Ms. Vaughan was an avid golfer, loved working in the flower garden, traveling and entertaining friends.

Ms. Vaughan is predeceased by her husband of 47 years; three sisters, Sophie Osborn, Helen Cameron and Anne Moon; and  two brothers, John and Benjamin Wysocki. She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Busso of East Marion and Stephanie Maxwell of Neshanic Station, N.J.; and two brothers, William Wysocki Jr. of Orient and Thomas Wysocki of Salem, N.J. along with several nieces, a nephew and good friends.

Funeral services were held Oct. 21, and she was laid to rest alongside her husband at the Sam Houston Memorial Cemetery in Huntsville.

Alfred “Fred” Geszczynski of Southold, died at his home Oct. 25. He was 86.

Valerie Leoniak

Longtime New Suffolk resident Valerie F. Leoniak, died Oct. 30 at Mather Memorial Hospital. She was 69. 

She was born June 21, 1945, in New York City to William and Enid Bollman. Valerie had previously lived in Danbury, Conn.; Fredon and Sparta, N.J.; Greenwood Lake, Queens, and West Hempstead. She attended The Mary Louis Academy and St. John’s University. Valerie spent her childhood summers in Cutchogue and was happy to retire to the area.

Valerie was a homemaker who loved golf, baking, hand quilting and gardening. Family members said she was a gifted watercolor artist, who captured the beauty of the North Fork in her paintings. She loved spoiling her dogs, Skipper and Waldo.

Valerie was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and the Cedarettes at Cedar’s Golf Course.

Family members said she bravely battled illness several times throughout her life and maintained grace throughout. They wish to thank doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for Valerie during her difficult days.

Valerie is survived by her husband, Peter of New Suffolk; her daughters, Elizabeth McDowell of Massachusetts and Catherine Santopadre of Colorado; her sons, Michael, of Garrison, N.Y. and Nicholas, of Colorado; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service will be held Monday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations may be made to in Valerie’s name to Cedars Golf Club, 305 Cases Lane, Cutchogue, NY 11935.

John Zuhoski Jr.

Longtime Cutchogue resident John Zuhoski Jr. died peacefully Nov. 1 with his family by his side. He was 87.

He was born July 31, 1927, in Greenport to John and Anna (Ruskowski) Zuhoski. He worked in Cutchogue as a farmer and was a 60-year member of Cutchogue Fire Department. Family said Mr. Zuhoski enjoyed spending time on the water and fishing with his longtime friend, Jesse.

Mr. Zuhoski is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille (née Troyan); his children John (Theresa) Zuhoski III of Bay Shore, Michael (Geraldine), David, Gary, and Steven (Kristen) Zuhoski and Anne (Wesley) Lasota, all of Cutchogue, Laurie (Jack) Steiner of Southold, Sharon of Middle Island and Lisa Eastwood of Riverhead; 23 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Alex, of Cutchogue. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Orlowski.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue, where firematic services will take place. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Norma Grzesik

Norma Louise Grzesik died at her Greenport home Oct. 26, 2014, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born the first of three children, to Armand and Laura Boule Janson, Nov. 25, 1925 in Brooklyn. Norma married Stefan Grzesik in 1948 and shortly after, they purchased property in Greenport on L.I. Sound, summering there until 1983, when they retired. At that time, they moved from their permanent residence in Lindenhurst to their summer home in Greenport.

Norma and Stefan spent their “golden years” enjoying many family gatherings and the beautiful sunsets over the Sound. Norma loved reading, needlework, gardening, playing cards, talking to her grandchildren and Skyping on her iPad with her great-grandson.
She was an active volunteer at San Simeon by the Sound and also at the Dominican Sisters thrift store.

Norma was a member of St. Agnes Church in Greenport for 62 years where she was a Eucharistic minister and member of the Rosary Alter Society. She enjoyed having lunches and playing cards with her friends. Norma was also a member of the Red Hat Society, treasurer of the Greenport Homemakers and volunteered her time the the Friends of Floyd Memorial Library.

She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Stefan, her sister, Eileen Kuchinski and her brother, Lee Janson. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Gordon and son-in-law, Bob Gordon; her son, Stephen Grzesik and daughter-in-law, Donna Grzesik; four grandchildren, Cindy and Matthew Grzesik, and Michael and Eric Gordon; a granddaughter-in-law, Andy Gordon; and one great-grandson, Graham Gordon.

She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 20 at 11:30 a.m. at St Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Breast Cancer Foundation or Stony Brook University Hospital Cancer Center.

Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Inez Hall

Inez Hall

Inez Hall of Greenport passed away Oct. 28, 2014. She was 92. 

She was born in Bough, England, June 30, 1922, the daughter of Reginald and Violet Wordsworth. Ms. Hall served during World War II in the British Army from 1940 until 1943, as a driving instructor, staff car and transport driver for the 477 Cmt regiment.

As a teenager, Ms. Hall was a long-distance swimmer and loved sailing boats around Plymouth Harbor in England. She came to the United States after marrying Andrew Dasch, an American soldier serving in England during the war. After coming to America, she was an avid antique collector and dealer for over 60 years and was still going to flea markets and yard sales at age 92.

Ms. Hall was predeceased by her husbands Andrew Dasch, Vito Mannino and Robert Hall; her brother, Alex Wordsworth; her sister, Brenda Holiday; her son, Andrew Paul Dasch; her stepdaughter, Susan Hall; and her grandson, David Dasch Jr. She is survived by her sons, John and David Dasch of South Carolina; two daughters, Shirley Dasch (Bob) Krug of Florida; and Linda Mannino (John) Sondgeroth of East Marion; stepsons, Robert Hall of Saint James and Bruce Hall of Port Jefferson; sisters, Madeline West and Elizabeth Snook of England; brothers, Christopher Wordsworth of Auckland, NZ and Robin Wordsworth of Switzerland; grandchildren, Joey, Lisa, Jason, Rob, Jenny, Rich, Matthew, Darlene, Dawn, Diane, Jennifer and John; and many great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Services were private.

Lillian A. Smith of Southold died Oct. 31, 2014, at Stony Brook University Hospital. She was 76. 

She was born Jan. 26, 1938, in Astoria, Queens, to William and Elizabeth (née Smith) Ardus and was a graduate of Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park.

On April 9, 1960 she married Donald B.J. Smith in Garden City.

For 21 years, she was a patent clerk for the law firm of Scully, Scott, Murphy & Presser of Garden City.

From 1968 to 2002, she lived in Floral Park, at which time, she moved to Southold. Here, she was an active member and former deacon of First Presbyterian Church in Southold

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by two sons, Donald of Manhattan and Mark (Kristine) of Southold; a brother, James Ardus of Floral Park; and two grandsons, Mark and Kirk.

The family received visitors Nov. 4 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Religious services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley.

Norma Steiner

Norma M. Steiner of the North Fork and Florida, died Oct. 1 in Riverhead. She was 85. 

Ms. Steiner was born June 9, 1929, in Buffalo, to Chester and Kathleen Bradley. She served in the Civil Air Patrol during Word World II and, following graduation from Riverside High School in 1947, attended the University of Buffalo.

She worked for many years in healthcare administration at the Central Islip Psychiatric Center and was extremely active in numerous community organizations including the U.S. Power Squadrons, the Navy League, the American Cancer Society, the Abilities Foundation, the Girl Scouts, and the Lioness Club of the Islips, of which she served as president.

Predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Ward, and two children, Nancy and Bryan, she is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Pillai Thomas and Sally Beth Steiner; a son, W. Bradley Steiner; and one sister, Carol Burandt; as well as many grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral mass in her honor will be held at St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church in Largo, Fla. on Dec. 22.

Anne Anasagasti

Anne Anasagasti of Southold died Nov. 9 at The Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton. She was 77. 

She was born Aug. 4, 1937, in East Meadow to John and Laura Quigley and worked as a check filer at North Fork Bank Data Center.

Ms. Anasagasti was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 2004 and is survived by her children, Charles, Stephen, and Carolyn, all of Florida and Michael of Southold; her brother, John Quigley; her sister, Susan Quigley; and four grandchildren.

A Mass was held Nov. 11 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Ms. Anasagasti was cremated and a private burial will take place at Calverton National Cemetery at a later date.

Dolores J. Fenn

Dolores J. Fenn, formerly of New York City and Sag Harbor, passed away Nov. 4, 2014, at Stony Brook Hospital on Long Island. For the past three years, she had been a resident of Peconic Landing in Greenport. 

Born in Patterson, N.J., in 1925 and growing up in Lincoln Park, Dolores lived a rich life with interests in world travel, photography, fine arts, fashion, gourmet cooking, and needlecraft. In the early 1950s, she had the opportunity to live in Rome, Italy, holding a job with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. She lived in Rome for five years, using vacation time to travel throughout Europe and parts of the Middle East. When she returned to the United States, it was with a copious amount of slides, colorful tales, and a lifelong interest in international cooking.

For over 50 years, Dolores lived in Manhattan and weekended in Sag Harbor, home of her sister, Camille Fenn Hedges, and her brother, Otto Fenn. She frequently visited Paris, where another brother, Gene Fenn, was a prominent fashion photographer. During her years in New York, she took Chinese cooking lessons and would do her “homework” on weekends by cooking elaborate Chinese feasts for her family. She became an avid collector of cookbooks, fine tableware, postcards, artists’ books, and children’s books.

Dolores earned a bachelor’s degree in art history from Columbia University and later got a master’s in library and information science. Knitting, embroidery, and other types of needlework were favorite pastimes of hers.

In late 2011, she put the family home, Sag Harbor’s Gingerbread House, up for sale and moved to Peconic Landing. She joined many interest groups and took many classes there, including fine art, music appreciation, needlework, and history. Dolores was an active member of the art committee, took many trips to New York City, and painted portraits of her friends’ pets. She lived an active life up to her last day and passed away with her makeup perfectly done, as she would have wanted.

She was buried Nov. 10, in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Arrangements were in the care of the Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Carol-Lynn Manno

Longtime North Fork resident Carol-Lynn Manno passed away June 30, 2014,  in the care of Spartenberg Hospice in South Carolina in the arms of her mother and sister. She was born Feb. 23, 1956. 

Carol struggled with a rare cancer that left her paralyzed, yet to the end she was determined to beat the cancer and walk again.

Carol was a loving daughter, hardworking, loyal to many friends, an avid motorcyclist and member of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE). She will be missed by many for her sincere acts of kindness and thoughtfulness to others.

Carol leaves behind her stepfather and mother, Christopher and Catherine (née Cuozzo) Gawelko; sisters, Cynthia and Mary-Ellen Manno; nephew, Jeremy (Daci) Slater; niece, Christina Chadwick; two great-nephews; two great-nieces; her uncles James and Dominick Cuozzo; and many cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Manno; and her grandparents Frank and Wanda Cuozzo and Sebastian and Louise Manno.

The request for no services was honored by Carol’s family. She wanted to remembered as she was before the illness ravaged her body.

Longtime Greenport resident Rosemary Hughes died Nov. 9 at San Simeon by the Sound. She was 76. 

She was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Greenport to Mary and Edward Reiter. After graduating high school, she married Russell Hughes in 1957 in Greenport.

Ms. Hughes was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenport.

Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Hughes is survived by her sons, Daniel, Joe, Ted, and James, all of Greenport, John of Florida, and Tom of East Marion; her daughters, Jane Parker of Greenport and Nancy Wolfteich of Florida; her brothers Ted and Robert Reiter; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren..

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Greenport, officiated by Pastor Thomas LaMothe.

Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

George Ritchie Latham Jr.

George Ritchie Latham Jr.

Orient resident George Ritchie Latham Jr. passed away in his home Nov. 15. He was 96. 

Born in East Williston Feb. 27, 1918, he was the only son of George and Elizabeth Edwards Latham. He attended high school at Friends Academy in Locust Valley, and later Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. where he met his future wife, Kathleen Leslie. They were married in May 1941.

Ritchie owned and operated Port Washington Lumber Company in Port Washington and was a long-term board member of the Roslyn Savings Bank. Upon retirement, he returned to Orient where he had spent summers all his life. He became a member of the Southold Town Planning Board, on which he served for many years. Everyone who knew him was a friend.

Ritchie was a well-loved local historian. He did quite a lot of traveling, but his heart was always
in Orient.

Ritchie is survived by his wife; his four children, David (Linda), Priscilla, James, and Zoë; his sister, Ann Bliss of Andover, Vt.; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first son, George Ritchie III; his sisters Mary Louise Blank and Margaret Strachan; and one grandson, Joseph.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Nov. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A church service will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at Orient Congregational Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Peconic Land Trust.
